In the wake of the ultimately successful strike ballots by the National Union of Teachers and the Public & Commercial Services union for strike action on 30th June, trade union and anti-cuts activists from across Surrey, including members of the NUT and PCS unions, met on Monday 13th to discuss plans for supporting striking public sector workers on the day of the strike. Saturday 4th June saw the National Conference for the reinvigoration of the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts; the student-led group who called a number of demonstrations last winter.  The Birmingham conference was attended by activists from across the UK and Northern Ireland, including but not limited to Liverpool, Belfast, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Sheffield and Royal Holloway. Save Surrey’s Libraries Thursday 16th June, 5.30pm till 7pm UNISON Regional HQ, Ranger House, Walnut Tree Close, Guildford Our libraries are under attack. All over the country library staff, unions, library users and communities are getting together to protect their libraries. Authors, playwrights, actors and other celebrities have pledged their support by giving talks and organising protests and read-ins. Surrey County Council Trades Unions (SCCTU) and Save Our Services in Surrey (SOSiS) are coming together for a meeting initiated by UNISON to discuss the Hands Off Our Pensions campaign and specifically the planned strike action on 30th June. All the unions who are preparing to strike, plus reps from many other unions and from the anti-cuts groups will discuss what we can all do to support the day itself and to prepare for future action which may involve a wider layer of unions including UNISON. Unfortunately, due to illness and other reasons, we had quite a few apologies and this was one of our smallest steering committee meetings. Nevertheless it was businesslike, optimistic and forward looking and we agreed a number of actions. We also discussed the range of cuts planned and those already hitting public services in the county.
